Short Bio
  • He entered the Military Medical School (MMS) in 1971 and graduated from the Medical School of Thessaloniki in 1977.
    He specialised in Microbiology (1981-1985) at the 401 GSNA and at the Children's Hospital "Aghia Sophia", and received his specialty title in 1985.

     

    During his career as a military doctor he served in the 401 GSNA and Alexandroupolis Military Hospital as Director of the
    Laboratories and Head of Department. He was retired from the army in 2001 as a Brigadier General (YI), on his application.

     

    Scientific and Research Work
    - He holds a PhD from the University of Thessaloniki.
    - He was trained at the Pasteur Institute for three years.
    - Post Doctoral Studies with a government scholarship in the Medical School of the University of Edinburgh in 1990 and 1991. During his postgraduate studies, he produced five scientific papers regarding microorganisms of sexually transmitted diseases and meningococcus. He also specialised in the cultivation of anaerobic microbes, fungi and laboratory quality control.
    - He has authored and published 30 scientific papers in official foreign and Greek medical journals, articles and papers in medical journals and medical conferences.

     

    Special scientific distinctions
    - He discovered, for the first time in the world, a new serotype of the salmonella microbe, which gave it the Greek name "Phaliron" and is
    registered on the World Health Organization (WHO) as Salmonella Phaliron.
    - Best Research Paper Award of the 17th Armed Forces Congress.
    - Conducted a pioneering epidemiological research study on a nationwide scale about the meningococcal disease in the Greek Army, which resulted in
    the application of a specific vaccine, resulting in the elimination of the endemic cases of meningitis in the army.
