Short Bio
Dr. Marios Maragakis, M.D. is a distinguished Pediatric and Adolescent Surgeon with extensive clinical, academic, and research experience in Greece, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
He graduated from the University of Athens Medical School in 1980 and obtained his Specialization in Pediatric Surgery from the same university in 1987. His early clinical training included positions at major university hospitals in Athens, Erlangen, and Muenster, where he worked under renowned professors such as G.H. Willital, P. Gall, and K. Pappas.
From 1987 to 1995, Dr. Maragakis served at the University of Muenster, Germany, as University Registrar, Deputy Director, and Associate Professor at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Pediatric, Neonatal, and Adolescent Surgery. During this period, he supervised multiple doctoral theses and led pioneering experimental and clinical research in microsurgery, organ transplantation, and surgical tissue response — with emphasis on ultrasound- and laser-assisted techniques, perinatal surgery, and neonatal intensive care.
His postdoctoral fellowships include advanced training in Laparoscopic and Thoracoscopic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh (USA) and the University of Hamburg (Germany), as well as specialized programs in Transplant Surgery (University of Hannover) and Perinatal Surgery (Melbourne Children’s Hospital).
Dr. Maragakis’ research contributions span topics such as surgical tissue response, controlled ultrasonic dissection, intestinal transplantation, and minimally invasive pediatric surgery. His collaborative studies have been conducted in partnership with the University and Technical University of Athens, and international institutions including Los Angeles University and the Melbourne Children’s Hospital.
Since 1996, Dr. Maragakis has been practicing in Greece, currently serving as Director of Pediatric Surgery at the Athens Medical Center and GAIA Maternity Hospital. His clinical focus includes neonatal and pediatric surgery, laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures, and complex congenital anomalies, always emphasizing safety, precision, and compassionate, family-centered care.
