The original building was constructed by the Venetians who ruled Chania back in the days, was afterwards renovated by the Ottomans in the 17th century and was turned into a hotel by the Greeks that was consequently closed in 1970.

During Ottoman rule, the Venetian Port was left to chance until the 19^th century when the Egyptians occupied the area and reconstructed the harbor and its lighthouse.

Each floor retains its own features, as a direct reference to the construction materials and era they were used in (Venetian, Ottoman and Modern Greek periods respectively), in a repetitive pattern along with decorative motifs.
